We are all very proud of what Jason has been able to achieve at Sunbury in the past two seasons. He has thoroughly deserved all the recognition for an outstanding season during 2013-14.  Jason is a fine example for our young players to follow and an inspiration to all because every time he enters the field of play wearing his Royal Blue cap he plays his heart out for his team and club.

Jason is already looking ahead to another strong performance next season having made his commitment  to the Sunbury Cricket Club for season 2014-15.

SCC Presentation Night – Season 2013/14

SCC Presentation night 2013/14

What a great night was had by all at this seasons gala event, Presentation night 2013/14. Hosted by Sunbury Bowling Club in their newly refurbished function room members were treated to an entertaining night of music and a fine three coarse meal.

President Scott Yardley recognised the Committee and Coaching panel for their efforts in at times was a busy season which included the move across to the Bowling Club and the hosting of the GDCA McIntyre Cup final at Clarke Oval. The Sunbury Bowling Club were thanked for their patience and understanding as we continue to build our new partnership. Partners of the Committee were presented a small gift as a special thank you.

Highlight of the night was the Life Membership presentations to Paul Webber and Scott Yardley.

Dean Surkitt recounted and spoke of the enduring cricket career of Paul which begun at Sunbury in 1986 as a young 16 y.o. player winning a first grade premiership to his current day ability to bat at No.3 also at the highest level. Paul during his career at Sunbury spanning over four decades is the all time games record holder and had also Captained and Coached our club at different times.

Travis Botten paid tribute to Scott reflecting on the previous difficult times the club faced in which Scott was always there pitching in where needed. As a young player Scott volunteered his time helping out by running the nets and in more recent times has served as Secretary and President where passion for our club is never in short supply. Scott is a well accomplished Batsman over many seasons and was Captain of  the most recent 1st XI and U16 premiership teams.

Senior Cricket Newsletter No. 3 2013/14

Senior Cricket Newsletter #3 Season 2013/14,

Sunbury defeated by 6 runs in one of the more memorable matches in McIntyre Cup history.

Match report

Riddell won the toss and chose to bat. On a damp track this proved to be a massive disadvantage as key to Sunbury’s success was to break through early. Riddell showed resilience in the first hour as Jason McGann and Heath Boffey found the going difficult slipping and sliding.

Brad Hunter (3/39) bowled a memorable spell unchanged for 18 overs was able to support a marathon effort from Jason McGann leading the attack with (5/58) Riddell finishing the innings at 171.

An even performance was required to achieve first innings honours however Sunbury fell short by 61 runs at the end of day 2. Jacob Brewer (36) and Paul Webber (30) were the stand outs. Unfortunately these were the only innings of note.

With nothing to lose on the third day Jason led his team in a throw of the dice situation. Bowl them out cheap and have a dash at the total. As it played out after keeping out the initial overs of Jason and Hunter, Riddell slumped to be all out for 90 after losing their 4th wicket at 77 being all out for 90.

The target set was 152  off 22 overs for victory.

After losing early wickets Jacob Brewer (53) continued his fine form attacking the bowling in an intelligent batting display. Wickets unfortunately fell at a consistent rate and without a partnership holding the later part of the innings together the task almost seemed insurmountable. Heath Boffey (38) held his nerve and batted with the lower order striking much needed boundaries.

In the end 12 runs off the last over although possible proved to be difficult to achieve. Heath managed to get the score within 6 runs of victory. In what has gone down as one of the tightest McIntyre finals in history it still  is no consolation.

In a week of mixed emotions and excitement I never have been more proud of a Sunbury team. Not only did our team manage to almost just get over the line in an epic battle but held their nerve in the face of the sometimes immature and unnecessary displays of poor sportsmanship in the way our batsmen were given “send offs” by their opponents.

Well done to Jason McGann for not only playing is heart out for his team and club but to show the cricketing public of the GDCA a lesson in sportsmanship and leadership. I call upon the GDCA umpires and officials who were all present and witnesses at the match to address this type of behaviour for the future benefit of all.

You could say in these games you are either first or last however as a club official I always have one eye on the coming years and where this club is heading.  As much as it hurts to lose the big one, I know we are on the right track for the future.

I have always worn the Royal Blue cap with pride and never have I been prouder to wear it than last Sunday.

GDCA Presentation

Sunbury captain-coach, Jason McGann has won the Sullivan Medal for season 2013/14. After 12 rounds of voting, McGann was level with Todd Keenan (Wallan) with Andrew Powell a further three votes back but two games of maximum votes in the last two rounds saw McGann win comfortably. Crowd favourite Heath Boffey lead the medal count early and finished equal 5th with 11 points.

 Sullivan%20Medallist%202013-14

At the GDCA Annual Presentation Night, awards were given to the best performances in each grade together with the announcement of the GDCA Team of the Year. Jason McGann after taking out the bowling award with 50 wickets @ 8.82 and the aggregate award with 948 points was also named captain of the GDCA team after an outstanding season. Sunbury’s Brad Hunter was also named in the GDCA Team of the Year as the leading spinner of the competition for the season.

Sunbury into Mc’s Grand Final!

blue logo

Sunbury defeated Woodend at Clarke Oval and will host this seasons GDCA McIntyre Cup Grand Final.  In what will be a tight contest the inform Sunbury team come up against premiers from two seasons ago Riddell who soundly accounted for Bacchus Marsh on the week-end. Capt / Coach Jason McGann has had a stella year having taken 50 wickets in the home and away season and winning the competition bowling average and points aggregate. We all know that to win a grand final is a team effort so it is up to the whole team to stand tall and redeem last years painful loss.

There were mixed emotions as there often is at this time of the season at all cricket clubs.

At Sunbury unfortunately our U14 team lost to Gisborne Redbacks in the Grand Final played at Clarke Oval. Sunbury batted on the first day posting 121 runs which proved not enough against the strong  Gisborne batting line up. As the game was in the balance late in the  innings Sunbury missed a couple of difficult chances and was unable to peg back the initiative.

Sunbury Coach Daniel Boyd addressed his team after the match saying he was very proud of the teams efforts during the season having won nine games straight, exceeding all expectations. Dan thanked Team Manager Kelly Gray for her outstanding contribution throughout the season.

Sunbury CC 3rd XI went down in a tight battle against the much favoured East Sunbury team in the E grade semi-final. Set 220 runs to win East Sunbury passed the score in the second last over. In tight matches such as these it is a matter of one half chance that can be the difference in the result.

So a top effort by our team for the season and a bright future for the club considering the contribution from young players such as Dylan Douglas, Nathan Marshall and Bryce Williamson.

Our U16 are playing off in the Consolation Final against Rupertswood Gold at Rupertwood. In a low scoring affair it is proving a tight battle that is due to resume this Saturday morning. Sunbury require only 13 runs to win however with only a couple wickets in hand. Get down to Rupertswood to watch the nail-biting finish early on Saturday morning.

Irrespective of the result in this match the Sunbury U16 team has unearthed some real talent for the future. Dylan Landt, Kyle Corcoran and Jordan Pearson have already made valuable contributions at senior level this season and should continue to improve into next season and through hard work and perseverance become fine Sunbury players.

There is much anticipation and excitement surrounding  the Sunbury CC 1st XI this weekend as our team tackle a highly rated Riddell outfit in the GDCA McIntyre Cup Grand Final at Clarke Oval. This is a huge opportunity for our team to win our sixth GDCA senior grade (A Grade / McIntyre Cup) premiership and go down in history as one of our greatest teams to wear the Royal Blue.

So forget about all those things that are boring me as a write like household maintenance, AFL games between two interstate teams and Aunty June’s Sunday afternoon tea. So don’t give me any lame excuses, grab your Royal Blue shirt and cap, get down to the Clarke, have a chat to your current or ex team mates and show your support. Come and watch our team write their own history, Go Sunbury!

Yours in cricket,

Marty Kelders
