James Wilson Memorial T20 game

Sunbury CC v Sunshine United CC

This Sunday, 8th February 2015: 11 am to 4 pm

Clarke Oval, Riddell Road  Sunbury

In honour of James Wilson, the cricket clubs that were a big part of his life have joined together to create a day whereby both family, friends and teammates can get together doing something Jim loved.

The T20 match will be played between James former club where he played juniors and learned to love the game, Sunbury CC and his current club Sunshine United CC. The game will be played on James first home ground, the Clarke Oval, Sunbury.

This match will be played in honour of and to celebrate James life, his life in cricket and to share time with his family, friends and current and former team mates. We would also  like to see all those who simply love the game of cricket come down and spend a few hours and enjoy the entertainment and activities.

BBQ and drinks will be on throughout the day and there will be some games to help keep all the little ones occupied 🙂

Any help on the day is welcome, hope to see everyone there!

Phillip Hughes 1988 – 2014

Phillip Hughes 1988 – 2014

Dear All,

You will have heard that Southern Redbacks batsman, Phillip Hughes sustained a fatal injury at the Sydney Cricket Ground earlier this week.

It is my sad duty to inform you that a matter of hours ago Phillip Hughes passed away.

The word tragedy gets used far too often in sport but this freak accident is now a real-life tragedy. Just shy of his 26th birthday, Phillip has been taken from us far too young.

As a cricketer, Phillip was an incredibly talented and dearly loved member of the Australian, South Australian and Adelaide Strikers squads and a former NSW representative. He also played county cricket in England and IPL in India. Without doubt he was a rising star whose best cricket was still ahead of him.

As a cricket community we mourn his loss and extend our deepest sympathies to Phillip’s family, friends and team mates at this incredibly sad time, and of course to the Australian cricket family and the State Associations. We are thinking of you right now.

I’d like to thank you and our club community around the country for the wonderful show of support given to Phillip and his family. From social media to phone calls to our front desk, the support has been tremendous and I want to thank you on behalf of Australian cricket.

We know that Phillip would encourage you to celebrate the game of cricket with your mates over the weekend. We ask you to do that in tribute to Phillip Hughes. Whether that’s getting creative with writing his player number 408 on the outfield, wearing a black arm band or having a moment’s silence after the toss. Celebrate his great achievements and the contribution he made to our game.

Phillip Joel Hughes played 26 Test matches for his country. He will be sadly missed and forever remembered.

Yours sincerely,

JAMES SUTHERLAND
CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

SCC gains Good Sports Level 3 Accreditation

blue logo

Good Sports Level 3 Accreditation

Sunbury Cricket Club is committed to the principles of responsible alcohol management by applying for Level 3 accreditation in the Australian Drug Foundation’s Good Sports program.

Good Sports is the first nationwide alcohol management program of its kind and is run in Victoria by Good Sports with the support of the Australian Drug Foundation and the Department of Health and Ageing. The program was developed following research conducted by the Australian Drug Foundation which indicated that by introducing responsible alcohol management practices, clubs became safer and more viable.

As a requirement of Level 3, the Club has to demonstrate alcohol responsibility and reduced alcohol related harm. The policy includes sections on bar management, the sale of low and non-alcoholic drinks, safe transport, the provision of food when alcohol is served and removing the emphasis on alcohol for player awards, functions and prizes.

We are confident that our involvement in the Good Sports program will continue to improve the environment at the Club. We are working to ensure that Sunbury Cricket Club is a great place to participate and socialise for all members of our community.

The club will regularly monitor to ensure we comply with the program. It is the responsibility of all members to make sure we do the right thing when drinking and enjoying ourselves.

The team of 12 players must consist of six batsmen, an all-rounder at no 7, a wicket-keeper at no 8 and four bowlers, at least one of whom has to be a spinner – Madura Weerasinghe Silva in this team.

As senior coach, Jason has led our club to consecutive GDCA grand final appearances and this past season has been adjudged GDCA Kevin Sullivan Medalist and Captain of the GDCA Team of the Year 2013-14.

We are all very proud of what Jason has been able to achieve at Sunbury in the past two seasons. He has thoroughly deserved all the recognition for an outstanding season during 2013-14.  Jason is a fine example for our young players to follow and an inspiration to all because every time he enters the field of play wearing his Royal Blue cap he plays his heart out for his team and club.

Jason is already looking ahead to another strong performance next season having made his commitment  to the Sunbury Cricket Club for season 2014-15.

SCC Presentation Night – Season 2013/14

blue logo

SCC Presentation night 2013/14

What a great night was had by all at this seasons gala event, Presentation night 2013/14. Hosted by Sunbury Bowling Club in their newly refurbished function room members were treated to an entertaining night of music and a fine three coarse meal.

President Scott Yardley recognised the Committee and Coaching panel for their efforts in at times was a busy season which included the move across to the Bowling Club and the hosting of the GDCA McIntyre Cup final at Clarke Oval. The Sunbury Bowling Club were thanked for their patience and understanding as we continue to build our new partnership. Partners of the Committee were presented a small gift as a special thank you.

Highlight of the night was the Life Membership presentations to Paul Webber and Scott Yardley.

Dean Surkitt recounted and spoke of the enduring cricket career of Paul which begun at Sunbury in 1986 as a young 16 y.o. player winning a first grade premiership to his current day ability to bat at No.3 also at the highest level. Paul during his career at Sunbury spanning over four decades is the all time games record holder and had also Captained and Coached our club at different times.

Travis Botten paid tribute to Scott reflecting on the previous difficult times the club faced in which Scott was always there pitching in where needed. As a young player Scott volunteered his time helping out by running the nets and in more recent times has served as Secretary and President where passion for our club is never in short supply. Scott is a well accomplished Batsman over many seasons and was Captain of  the most recent 1st XI and U16 premiership teams.
