Sunbury into Mc’s Grand Final!

blue logo

Sunbury defeated Woodend at Clarke Oval and will host this seasons GDCA McIntyre Cup Grand Final.  In what will be a tight contest the inform Sunbury team come up against premiers from two seasons ago Riddell who soundly accounted for Bacchus Marsh on the week-end. Capt / Coach Jason McGann has had a stella year having taken 50 wickets in the home and away season and winning the competition bowling average and points aggregate. We all know that to win a grand final is a team effort so it is up to the whole team to stand tall and redeem last years painful loss.

There were mixed emotions as there often is at this time of the season at all cricket clubs.

At Sunbury unfortunately our U14 team lost to Gisborne Redbacks in the Grand Final played at Clarke Oval. Sunbury batted on the first day posting 121 runs which proved not enough against the strong  Gisborne batting line up. As the game was in the balance late in the  innings Sunbury missed a couple of difficult chances and was unable to peg back the initiative.

Sunbury Coach Daniel Boyd addressed his team after the match saying he was very proud of the teams efforts during the season having won nine games straight, exceeding all expectations. Dan thanked Team Manager Kelly Gray for her outstanding contribution throughout the season.

Sunbury CC 3rd XI went down in a tight battle against the much favoured East Sunbury team in the E grade semi-final. Set 220 runs to win East Sunbury passed the score in the second last over. In tight matches such as these it is a matter of one half chance that can be the difference in the result.

So a top effort by our team for the season and a bright future for the club considering the contribution from young players such as Dylan Douglas, Nathan Marshall and Bryce Williamson.

Our U16 are playing off in the Consolation Final against Rupertswood Gold at Rupertwood. In a low scoring affair it is proving a tight battle that is due to resume this Saturday morning. Sunbury require only 13 runs to win however with only a couple wickets in hand. Get down to Rupertswood to watch the nail-biting finish early on Saturday morning.

Irrespective of the result in this match the Sunbury U16 team has unearthed some real talent for the future. Dylan Landt, Kyle Corcoran and Jordan Pearson have already made valuable contributions at senior level this season and should continue to improve into next season and through hard work and perseverance become fine Sunbury players.

There is much anticipation and excitement surrounding  the Sunbury CC 1st XI this weekend as our team tackle a highly rated Riddell outfit in the GDCA McIntyre Cup Grand Final at Clarke Oval. This is a huge opportunity for our team to win our sixth GDCA senior grade (A Grade / McIntyre Cup) premiership and go down in history as one of our greatest teams to wear the Royal Blue.

So forget about all those things that are boring me as a write like household maintenance, AFL games between two interstate teams and Aunty June’s Sunday afternoon tea. So don’t give me any lame excuses, grab your Royal Blue shirt and cap, get down to the Clarke, have a chat to your current or ex team mates and show your support. Come and watch our team write their own history, Go Sunbury!

Sunbury finish top of Mc’s ladder – we are off to the finals!

blue logo

Sunbury finish top of Mc’s ladder – we are off to the finals!

In a massive weekend of cricket for Sunbury followed by two great wins from our U14 and U16 teams, our 1st XI win outright against a hapless St. Anthony’s, our 3rd XI clinch a spot in the finals doing the same thing.

Unfortunately our 4th XI was on the other end just missing out on the four by percentage as Ashfield win outright against Riddell and handing United ten points in the process.

All eyes are now looking toward this weekends matches.

At Clarke Oval,  Sunbury 1st XI host Woodend in the winner take all McIntyre Cup semi-final. Sunbury will start as firm favourites but history tells us that once the battle commences it’s even money.

SCC’s all conquering U14 team will host Gisborne Redbacks in the morning also at Clarke Oval in the Grand Final which will be a big thrill for these guys playing on the premier ground in the district in front of a crowd of Royal Blue.

Dom Douglas’s 3rd XI travel to Langama Park to battle against the highly fancied East Sunbury XI in the E Grade semi-final. Anything can happen in these matches, if our guys can get a couple of early wickets the pressure will be on.

SCC’s U16′s will visit Rupertswood in the consolation Grand Final. There are some real stars of the future representing our club in this seasons U16′s as shown by the majority of the team also performing well in the senior 3rd and 4th XI’s.

So get right behind our teams this Saturday and Sunday, there is no reason why you can’t see some of all the 4 games and give our team the support they deserve. There really is no excuse, so don’t worry about the lawns, that can be mowed in April, call a plumber to fix the leaky tap and washing the car is a waste of time, it’s going to rain mid week anyway.

Grab your club shirt and cap and join the Royal Blue army!

By popular demand I’m resending an article from a previous newsletter…..

To finish off I just want to share a little xmas story.

The past few xmases I have been given a Jamie Oliver recipe book, which is great.  His recipes are easy to follow, a little funky and tasty..I like it. The recipe books sit in the kitchen ready to use at any time. You’re thinking what has this got to do with cricket??  A recipe for a tasty meal is a constant, ingredients prepared in a certain way, each time you are guaranteed the same result every time you follow it to the letter. Same in cricket!!! Follow the same principles each time during the season and the same result will occur.

Lets think about a recipe for success for a cricket team.

  • A pre-season training program covering all elements, batting, bowling and fielding.
  • Listening and taking on board tips from the coaches and experienced players.
  • Thinking about where you need to improve your game. Set yourself goals e.g. number of total runs / wickets per season, go up a grade, makes the finals, win a flag!
  • Make a committment, make sacrifices and maybe do a little extra training with your mates or by doing a little extra fitness work.
  • Every now and then help out around the club and on game day by setting up or packing away.
  • Play with a mindset of following team plans, your role in the team or whats required in the situation of the game.
  • Practice regularly, work towards improving your game and be a good team-mate and clubman.
  • Prepare the night before, focus on game day, be positive, be confident and play to win!
  • Enjoy being around the club, go to club functions, go to country week with a few mates and most of all enjoy your self, have a laugh.

Do I need to go on?

I learned the recipe for success from former leaders of our club including my first A Grade Captain Max Harding(1981),  Richard Lee and  Neil White. The current leaders of our club have all tasted success and know the recipe for success. Jason, Brad and John Marshall have all played in many premiership winning teams, are all familiar with the recipe for success and of what success tastes like.

If you want to taste success yourself all you have to do is follow the recipe, it’s up to you.

Senior Cricket Newsletter #2 Season 2013/14

Senior Cricket Newsletter #2 Season 2013/14, 10th January, 2014

To inform senior members of a few changes around the club as we enter the run towards the finals.

  • Game day at Clarke Oval will be based in the McMahon Pavillion. The change rooms and grand stand will be used again (no tents to set up / pack away!). Afternoon tea will be served in the large room in the Pavillion. All after match drinks will be at the Bowling Club. Please, it’s a team effort to get things set up on game day.
  • Marking out of the Clarke Oval boundary. We need to be more consistent when marking out the boundary lines. A string line will be used to mark out the boundary square of the wicket and the football boundary line will be used straight from the wicket.
  • Selection has been difficult with many unavailable due to the holiday season. Please consider your position in your team and the teams performance when booking holidays. As there is only 5 games to go (4 games for G grade) each game is vital for all teams. We need to strengthen ladder positions as much as we can to ensure the best possible chance coming into finals. This is important for all grades.
  • Same goes for those who haven’t paid their subs, players are missing out on selection this weekend and a possible finals berth because they are unfinancial. So many guys are coming up to us last night asking for leniency. Well guys, it’s disappointing when you have had since September to so. The Committee is working as hard as ever to make improvements for it’s members as we work through the difficult times of the past few years. Our objective has been via the move to the Bowling Club and through Social functions, Sponsorship  etc. is that we could hold a stronger financial position at the end of this season so we can explore reducing subscription levels across the board for next season and making other capital expenditure. We can only do this if we can meet our expenses for this year.  Team effort required please.
  • There has been some really positive news coming from selection this season regarding the debut Mc’s  game for Nathan Marshall and again last night Dylan Landt being presented his “1st XI Royal Blue cap” by Capt / Coach Jason McGann. The future of our 1st XI looks bright with strong showings from Michael and Steven Treweek this season and Jack Landt now being joined by his brother Dylan for this weeks match.
  • To finish off I just want to share a little xmas story.
