The VTCA T20 cricket tournament is arriving in Sunbury for the first and only time this season on Tuesday afternoon, January 28th. After a strong win against East Keilor and a loss to Senior Division team St. Albans, a victory in this match could advance the Roar to the next stage of the tournament.
However, the Roar will face a tough challenge against Sydenham Hillside, a top-four team in the VTCA Senior Division. Can the Roar’s younger players rise to the occasion and pull off an upset?
Come and witness the T20 action for yourself! The game starts at 5:00 PM, but be sure to arrive early to enjoy a drink and some BBQ food.
You’ll have the chance to see Sunbury CC legend Paul Webber, who recently shone in the Victorian Over 50’s championships.

Sunbury pulled off a rare reverse outright win in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association Steve McNamara Shield on Saturday.
It was a day of mixed fortunes for the Roar but it ended in the best possible way against the Williamstown CYMS.
Chasing 140, the Roar was bowled out for just 71 as it lost five quick wickets early on day two.
Jason McGann top scored with 23 and was the only player to score double figures.
With six points already in the bag, the CYs decided to go for the whole 10 points to try and set up their season.
They declared at 5-119 in their second innings.
McGann and Virosh Wijesinghe took two wickets each for the Roar.
It left the Roar needing 188 for a reverse outright. It was more than what the Roar had made in any innings this season.
Producing the best performance with the bat so far, the Roar finished 4-189 in 29 overs.
The Roar’s Marty Kelders said the group was thrilled to have turned things around.
“To be honest, what happened yesterday [Saturday] is very rare in cricket,” he said. “Speaking with Jason McGann and neither of us could remember it happening before.
“It’s really good to see that hard work has paid off. We have a new team.
“I think the win during the week in the T20 against East Keilor solidified the team a bit.”
Kelders said the CYs declaration was a bold one.
The Roar changed its batting order around and it paid off.
Kelders said the message was simple to the group when they went out to bat a second time.
“Play on feel and play your own game,” he said. “Opening with Mass [Indika Massalage] and Paul [Webber], they looked to take the game on and it came off.”
Massalage top scored with 66, while Webber scored 46.
Kelders said the most pleasing thing was that everyone came in and played their role.
He said seeing the younger guys step up was really pleasing.
“Jacob Caruana has come into the senior group as has Jordan Ballinger,” he said. “Virosh Wijesinghe is another and Kyle Corcoran bowled really well but it didn’t show in the figures.
“We were led by the young players.”
Kelders said the group was hoping this would build some confidence for the rest of the season.
He said they were still learning how to play with each other.
“A result like that is really lifting,” he said.

In the T20 competition, the Roar started well against East Keilor.
The Roar made 149 from its 20 overs with Ashan Ranaweera top-scoring with 26. East Keilor was in trouble at 8-45 before a late comeback. It fell short with East Keilor bowled out for 122. Ranaweera took 6-10 for the Roar.

It is with very mixed emotions I come to you with the following information. The VTCA have finalized their decision on the results of the grand finals that were cancelled this week. Under law E141.7 which then moves into law E141.8, if no first innings result is reached the game is deemed a draw. Where the match is deemed a draw, the team ranked higher leading into finals is declared the winner.
Based on this information, unfortunately our 1st eleven have will be deemed runners up.
But from this point we need to celebrate the fantastic achievement of our 2nd Eleven crowned Premiers for season 2019/20.
Congratulations to Samuel Fisher and all team members for a fantastic season and well deserved win.
As I stated at the top, we will all have mixed emotions. But let’s stick tight, and celebrate our 2nds victory. The club will advise in coming days some celebration plans.
Unfortunately, due to the escalating COVID-19 virus risk, the Sunbury Cricket Club Executive Committee has made the decision to postpone both our Senior and Junior Presentation Nights.
We hope to reschedule later in the year and will advise accordingly.
Sunbury Roar U17’s delivered the club its maiden GDCA U17 premiership yesterday. This group had also been GDCA U15 premiers in the past two years.
Playing at Clarke Oval, visitors Bacchus Marsh lost the toss and were asked to bat first. The Bulls were restricted to being all out for 114 runs in the 44th over ending the days play. Future stars Ryan Doyle (3/10) and Blake Watson (3/18) shared the bowling honours for the Roar.
Returning on Sunday, Sunbury Roar accounted for the total in the 41st over largely due to a match winning performance by Daniel Caruana carrying his bat for the innings scoring 51 runs not out, earning him man of the match award.
Congratulations on a Roartastic season and Grand Final win to all the players, coaches, family and friends. There are exciting times ahead for the Roar as this group progress on to bigger and better things next season.
Sunbury Roar 1st XI
Sunbury Roar 1st XI travelled to Moonee Valley to play off in the Russel Pollock Shield Div 5 Grand Final.
Sunbury Captain Craig Ballinger lost the toss and was asked to bat by an opposition who was expecting to get on top early in the four day contest. This wasn’t to be the case as the Roar managed 1/108 at tea due to strong showing from Justin Nelson (42) and the Sunbury skipper (62). At the end of the days play the Roar was 8/208 after losing a few cheap wickets in the middle order at the hands of their off spinning import.
On day two young gun Jorden Tentonello continued his good form and batted with the tail finishing on 68 not out and Sunbury with an innings total of 232 in the 90th over.
A stunning opening display saw Jason McGann tear through the heart of the Moonee Valley batting order capturing an unprecedented 5 wickets in his first 3 overs, including a sensational hat-trick.
At five wickets for one run (just in case you think you are seeing things thats 5/1) MV batters to their credit dug in until the prize wicket of Cafari was captured; cleaned up by a beautiful delivery from Jay King ending the 55 over partnership with the score at 72. Jay went on to take another two wickets in quick succession in a telling few overs. Moonee Valley’s recovery was short lived, at the end of play score at 8/78.
Pundits may say the Roar have got the upper hand in this epic battle but knowing our opponents they will not go down without a fight and there is a long way to go in this match. We look forward to next Saturday with excitement and anticipation.

Sunbury Roar 2nd XI
Sunbury Roar 2nd XI Captain Sam Fisher won the toss and threw the opposition in on the Graveyard wicket at Progress Reserve. It proved to be tough batting for the highly rated top order of Footscray ANA and scoring was made difficult by good tight bowling. At the end of play on the first day the score was left at 7/95.
It only took a few overs on the 2nd day to take the remaining wickets and our opponents only managed an additional 2 runs, all out 97. Brad Hunter drew from his wealth of experience finished the innings with the fantastic figures of 8/37 off a marathon 33 overs.
In reply the Roar batsmen managed to pass their total by 25 runs at the end of the days play with the total at 9/122. Paul Webber led the charge at the top of the order scoring 55 runs and youngster Mitch McClean finished the day unbeaten on 21 not out.

Sunbury Roar GDCA semi finals
Also this weekend Sunbury Roar 3rd XI face Eynesbury in the semi final at Mt. Carberry Reserve and 4th’s play off for a grand final berth vs. Rupertswood at Salesian College Oval 1.
Sunbury has its eyes on an outright win and top spot in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 5 Russell Pollock Shield.
Facing Sunshine YCW in a do-or-die match in the final round, the Roar has the upper hand after day one.
With six sides fighting for four spots, second-placed Sunbury has already claimed first innings points, while all other matches are still up for grabs.
Roar captain-coach Craig Ballinger said their mindset heading into the game was the key behind their performance.
“We entered the game in a bit of a finals mindset,” he said. “
If we didn’t turn up and perform, that’s the end of the season.”
The Roar took a risk taking Jay King into the game under an injury cloud.
The Roar had hoped to bat first to give him another week to recover, but it wasn’t the case, but King wasn’t needed to bowl anyway.
“We’ve got quality players coming through and making the most of the opportunities when they are there,” Ballinger said.
“This week it was Jason McGowan who took 6-22.”
The Roar bowled Sunshine out for just 48.
They used three bowlers, with Michael Treweek also taking three wickets.
Ballinger said Treweek continues to make batters play and make mistakes.
The Roar were keen to make sure that they got the job done on day one, with wet weather already playing a major role this season.
Ballinger said at the same time they were pretty cautious.
“Last round we were in trouble at 5-40 quickly, so we had to get through the first hour and not lose wickets.
“We wanted to bat a bit of time and hopefully get the points.”
Sunbury will resume at 4-110. Ballinger made 54.
Ballinger said despite having secured first innings points, they wanted to claim an outright win and try and secure top spot.
The first innings victory is enough to secure a finals spot.
“We’re going to go hammer and tong to go and get an outright,” he said.
“Moonee Valley is in a bit of strife and if we can get the job done, hopefully we’ll play a couple of home finals.
“The pressure is off and you can already feel it around the rooms, a sense of relief.”
All six of the Roar’s senior sides, five men’s and one women’s, have made finals.
Ballinger said it was a first for the club.
“It’s starting to show how much the club is starting to become a destination club, a club with a point of difference.”
