Sunbury Roar 1st XIhave finished the season on a high after an eventful season with a resounding win over Lancefield.
Highlight of the match was Heath Boffey’s 155 not out off only 127 balls. After starting at Sunbury in U12’s Heath played his first senior game for our club in 1995 and has played in the GDCA first grade competition since. This is the all-rounders first ever century. Sunbury CC are very proud of what Heath has achieved during his career and are delighted that Heath was able to pass this milestone with his family and friends present. Next year Sunbury Roar are looking to further progress having given an opportunity to it’s young brigade of players.
Sunbury Roar 2nd XIfinish off the season going down to Blackwood however can hold their heads high after an indifferent latter part of the season seeing key players injured or unavailable. Stand out performance was Kyle Corcoran taking a handsome 5/44 in the second innings. Our 2nd XI will benefit from the seasons experience and look forward to getting back on track as our clubs depth improves.
Still in the hunt for premiership glory our the Sunbury Roar 3rd XI and U15teams.
Just this morning Sunbury Roar U15’s easily accounted for the modest total of 98 after an early scare of losing two wickets at the start of the innings. A solid partnership from young guns Blake Watson (51 n.o.) and Daniel Caruana (28) steadied proceedings to see the team into the Grand Final next week.
Sunbury Roar 3rd XIplay off in the semi-final at Clarke Oval next week against Bacchus Marsh after a stellar season finishing in clear 2nd position on the ladder. Good luck to Ian “Geiser” Johnson and the boys as they pursue ultimate glory.
Let us all get behind our U15’s and 3rd XI as they represent our club in the coming weeks and your support will assist them bringing home to Clarke Oval some well earned silver ware.
It was truly a night long to be remembered, with just over 150 past players, friends and family of our great club in attendance. Old team mates got together for the first time in many years, stories of cricket from long ago were shared with a captive audience, the inaugural Hall of Fame inductees and Sam Riggio compelled the audience with his memories of his time as a young promising as a SCC cricketer and his trials and tribulations since his unfortunate accident.
Presidents welcome
The night started off with a brief introduction, at times in verse, by MC Michael Corcoran and the traditional welcome from President Brendan Doyle.
Special guests in attendance included SCC No. 1 Ticket holder Jack Ogilvie, Hume Councillors Leigh Johnson and Jack Medcraft and GDCA Life Members Kevin Sulivan and Mick Jenson.
SCC Life members in attendance were also welcomed:
Don Bremner, Travis Botten, Ken Hosking, Marty Kelders, Richard Lee, Ray Lethlean, Bill Morrison, Barry Palmer, Jim Pearson, Dean Surkitt, Paul Webber, Scott Yardley, Gary Wollington (apologies due to ill health)
Sponsors Phil Lithgow of Sunbury Social Club, Devin Powell of DJP Accounting and Travis Botten of Colour Perfect were thanked for their support.
Brendan spoke of SCC being a family club, its push to promote womens cricket and the focus on the future through our junior program as a pathway to 1st grade cricket.
Club History
SCC Secretary Marty Kelders gave a brief run down of the formation of the club and a few highlights up to the time of the first premiership in 1952/53. The formation of the club, the building of a new pavilion in 1895 and joining GDCA in 1923.
1952/53 Premiership player Ron Forbes gave his account of the early 1950’s, our first 2 premierships, moving to the Clarke Oval on a turf wicket, interestingly the soil for the wicket was sourced from out the back of Rupertswood.
1969/70 Premiership Captain Clyde White congratulated his team mates from the 1969/70 premiership team all of which were present bar one, Ron Harris who has sadly passed. Clyde joked with GDCA Life member Kevin Sullivan about the condition of the wicket at times. hearing these stories were very entertaining.
SCC Life Member Bill Morrison gave a brief account of his experience in the early 70’s and how SCC had 4 teams i the same grade of the GDCA but chose to select even teams for the betterment of competition.
SCC Life Member Doug Smith spoke of the late to early 80’s with the rise of the juniors coming into the senior ranks and propelling the club into an era of great success including the 1986/87 Premiership.
SCC Life Member Dean Surkitt spoke patiently about former coach Tony Pearson and his ability to attract young players to the club in the mid 80’s, the tough times as a young player in uncompetitive teams and the rise to ultimate glory.
1992/93 Premiership Captain / Coach Neil White entertained the crowd by not only praising the strong committee during the early 90’s and resounding success of winning 3 of the available 4 GDCA premierships but retelling some classic moments from Bendigo country week cricket.
SCC Life Member Scotty Yardley spoke of the difficult era of the early 2000’s without the investment in the junior program and the slide to 2nd grade cricket. Scott had led the senior XI back to McIntyre cricket after a long campaign with many setbacks and the current status which has a strong committee and a focus of youth development.
Hall of Fame
The inaugural Hall of Fame inductees will have their names on a new purpose built honour board and those in attendance were presented with a plaque.

Sam Riggio – “Nothing to Fear”
The night was capped off by SCC’s own Sam Riggio. Sam is a former SCC U16 Captain and senior player and we are very fortunate for him to recount his time at SCC, his love for cricket and sport in general and other outdoor activities.
Sam captivated the audience of his honest and open description of his tragic accident, of being told he would never walk again and his strength and determination to prove those who doubted him wrong. SCC are very proud of what Sam has acheived and is very fortunate to have him share his award winning presentation with us on this momentous occasion.
