Sunbury seals finals berth

Sunbury has its eyes on an outright win and top spot in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 5 Russell Pollock Shield.

Facing Sunshine YCW in a do-or-die match in the final round, the Roar has the upper hand after day one.

With six sides fighting for four spots, second-placed Sunbury has already claimed first innings points, while all other matches are still up for grabs.

Roar captain-coach Craig Ballinger said their mindset heading into the game was the key behind their performance.

“We entered the game in a bit of a finals mindset,” he said. “

If we didn’t turn up and perform, that’s the end of the season.”

The Roar took a risk taking Jay King into the game under an injury cloud.

The Roar had hoped to bat first to give him another week to recover, but it wasn’t the case, but King wasn’t needed to bowl anyway.

“We’ve got quality players coming through and making the most of the opportunities when they are there,” Ballinger said.

“This week it was Jason McGowan who took 6-22.”

The Roar bowled Sunshine out for just 48.

They used three bowlers, with Michael Treweek also taking three wickets.

Ballinger said Treweek continues to make batters play and make mistakes.

The Roar were keen to make sure that they got the job done on day one, with wet weather already playing a major role this season.

Ballinger said at the same time they were pretty cautious.

“Last round we were in trouble at 5-40 quickly, so we had to get through the first hour and not lose wickets.

“We wanted to bat a bit of time and hopefully get the points.”

Sunbury will resume at 4-110. Ballinger made 54.

Ballinger said despite having secured first innings points, they wanted to claim an outright win and try and secure top spot.

The first innings victory is enough to secure a finals spot.

“We’re going to go hammer and tong to go and get an outright,” he said.

“Moonee Valley is in a bit of strife and if we can get the job done, hopefully we’ll play a couple of home finals.

“The pressure is off and you can already feel it around the rooms, a sense of relief.”

All six of the Roar’s senior sides, five men’s and one women’s, have made finals.

Ballinger said it was a first for the club.

“It’s starting to show how much the club is starting to become a destination club, a club with a point of difference.”

Sunbury Roar in VTCA Semi-Final !

Who would have believed that in it’s first year in the VTCA Sunbury Roar would make the VTCA T20 Semi-final?

Certainly those in and around playing group believe in their ability and after a sound performance against Yarraville Club there is a lot of confidence among the players that we can put on a good show as we move further along in the competition.

But it won’t be easy. The Semi-final match is to be played against premier division club Sunshine United CC who have not lost a match in the tournament to date. The Tigers will start as firm favourites however in T20 cricket anything can happen on the day, can the mighty Roar cause another upset and face off in the final?

We are asking all Sunbury Roar players, members and supporters to get along to Selwyn Park, Sunshine to cheer our guys on, we would like to see as many people as possible at the match wearing their Royal Blue.

Match schedule:

Sunday, 16th February, 2.00pm at Selwyn Park, Sunshine.

First ball will be bowled at 2.00pm, get there early as parking is limited.

Sunbury Roar in upset win in VTCA 1/4 Finals !

Courtesy Tara Murray, Star Weekly;

Sunbury Roar produced an upset in the quarter final group stage of the Victorian Turf Cricket Association T20 competition.

Facing senior division side Yarraville Club last Tuesday, Sunbury, which plays in division 5, came away with their first victory of this stage of the tournament.

A below strength Clubbers made 6-164 from their overs with Keshav Pant top scoring with 34.

Murphy Boyd took two wickets for Sunbury.

Sunbury timed the run chase to perfection, winning with three balls remaining.

The Roar finished on 3-165.

Jason McGann, who moved up the order from his normal position, made 57 coming in at number three.

That innings included four fours and three sixes.

Sunbury sits percentage behind West Coburg in their group, with West Coburg having the bye last week. West Coburg and the Clubbers face each other in the final match of the group.

Meanwhile on Saturday in division 5, the Roar’s match against Williamstown Colts was washed out.

Only one match in the division got a result, with Gellibrand beating Sanctuary Lakes.

Sunbury faces Bellbridge in a two-dayer starting this weekend.

On Sunday, the Roar’s women’s side lost to St Andrews. Sunbury made 7-78 in reply to 5-89.

Sunbury Roar into VTCA 1/4 Finals !

Sunbury Roar advance to quarter finals after proving too strong for its opponents in the VTCA T20 round robin fixture.

First up was a home fixture at Clarke Oval where the Roar made light work of visitors Sanctuary Lakes. The Sharks won the toss and batted setting a target of 8/124, pick of the bowlers was Jase “the Ace” McGowan with 2/18. Dylan Landt (78*) and Justin Nelson (43*) finished off game for the Roar without losing a wicket. Dylan hit opposition bowling to all parts of Clarke Oval including 5 sixes (and has not been sighted since).

In the 2nd match; Melton South had no answer to the Roar posting a massive 2/238, bowled out for 85. Highlight of the match was the partnership between Captain Craig Ballinger posting an unbeaten 122 and Justin Nelson out on the final ball of the innings on 95.

In the third and final match; the Roar visited 4th Div. Caroline Springs. Jason McGann won the toss and elected to bat. Young gun Jordan Tentonello impressed the crowd with a fine 52, and Captain Jason McGann (44*) put on a show with some late innings hitting to help post a reasonable 5/156. The Eagles showed class at the top of the order and batted steadily until needing 7 runs to win in the final over. This over had everything, missed run outs, dropped catches and some easy runs. The Eagles managed a single off the last ball to win what proved to be a very entertaining afternoons cricket.

The Roar now face much fancied premier division team Yarraville and North Div 1 team West Coburg in the quarter finals. Our youngsters will be up against it but I am sure will be up to the challenge with plenty of leadership around them. Let’s all get behind our boys who i am sure will put on great show.
