SCC Presentation night 2015/16

What a great night was had by all. It was really good to see everyone dressed up for our clubs night of nights. Congratulations to all award recipients, there were some great performances during a testing season. Our senior team recovering after Christmas with some good wins and our grade teams showing plenty of promise for the future.

Sunbury Cricket Club recognised Jim Pearson and Marten Kelders with Life Memberships for outstanding service to the club.

Jim Pearson has been a keen and well respected  Captain and player over many years culminating as Captain of the  2011/12  F Grade Premiership and has had the privilege of coaching and playing along side all three of his children in the senior ranks.

Jim has been an enthusiastic parent and contributor to the Junior program as Coordinator for 9 years assisting all the way from Milo cricket  and has coached through all Junior age groups, with the help of Deb, cricket is a real family affair.

Jim’s involvement extended to the GDCA having taken up roles such as Junior delegate for 10 years and sat on the GDCA Excecutive for 6 years, 2 years as GDCA Junior Treasurer and 2 years as GDCA Female cricket coordinator. He also extended himself as a representative coach including the GDCA Representative Girls team.

In recent times Jim has served on the SCC Committee as Treasurer for 2 seasons and continues his cricket opening the batting and still shows a real passion for the game and the progression of our younger players.

Marten Kelders first started at our club in the U16’s in 1977/78. Working his way through the ranks as an opening bowler he played his first A Grade match in 1980. In the following years Marty played several seasons with mixed success before relocating to Adelaide with work. On his return in the late 80’s had changed his game to include off spin bowling.

In a last wicket effort Marty hit the winning run in the 1988/89          B Grade Premiership, played in the Premiers and Champions 1992/93 B Grade team  and retired soon after the tied C Grade Final win of 1998/99 at Clarke Oval. He still rues playing in the 1990/91 McIntyre Grand Final loss as a major disappointment and lost opportunity.

In his first tenure at the club, Marty had served on the committee for 11 years taking on tasks such as GDCA club delegate, writing newsletters, sponsorship and running raffle draws and served on the GDCA Tribunal Panel for many years,  2 as Chairman. Having returned to the club after a 15 year absence Marty has held positions on the club committee such as  Secretary for the past 3 seasons and continues to contribute where he can and still manages to play the odd game.

Senior and Junior coaching 2016/17 – Expressions of interest

SCC Logo 2015

On the back of a successful cricket season Sunbury Cricket Club are seeking expressions of interest for Senior and Junior coaches for next season.

Senior Coaching

There is an exciting opportunity to coach a club with very strong depth in young players and to lead a senior team with a mixture of seasoned cricketers and stars of the future. Our 1st XI has never been short of on field leadership with dual Kevin Sullivan Medalist, current GDCA Team of the Year Captain and Aggregates Award winner  Jason McGann, ably supported by experienced players Heath Boffey and Paul Webber.

What a great opportunity for an aspiring cricketer to lead a first grade club as a coach and senior player and take our club to the next level. A coach offering leadership, a structured approach to training in an inclusive environment would be considered favourably.

If your are an experienced first grade cricketer and are looking for a new challenge or if you are new player to the area please contact us, this is certainly going to be the place to be in 2016/17.

New club room facilities are currently being built and will be in use at the start of the season. Already the envy of the competition playing at the home of sport in Sunbury, the Clarke Oval, our new home will be a revelation.

Junior Coaching

Junior coaches are very important roles within our club, we are looking for those who have an interest in cricket development and coordination at training and on game day. Without volunteers these programs are not possible so even if you have little experience we can provide assistance, there is always a role for those at any level. Scorers and team managers are also valuable to the team, many hands make light work.

We are looking to again run U16’s, U14’s, U12’s, U11’s and the Milo program.

T20 Blast is another program we would love to run if we can get assistance.

SCC welcome expressions of interest from parents and care providers who simply like to participate in their child’s activities. You don’t really need to be a former or current player to join in the fun.

If you are attending a match and would like to assist or help out for the day, don’t be shy, step forward and introduce yourself to our coach. We pride ourselves on being a family oriented club so that means we like to see the whole family getting involved.

Particularly if you are an interested parent and see yourself in a coaching role or simply would like to contribute we would love to hear from you.

Milo cricket is one coordination position open, without your help it may not be possible to run this program, so please get in contact with the club so we can make 2016/17 even bigger and better.

James Wilson Memorial T20 2016

James Wilson Memorial T20 Match 2016

12650818_10208687671417215_3866809533935859584_n (1)

Sunshine United Cricket Club hosted the second James Wilson Memorial T20 Match at Selwyn Park, Albion today in fine conditions. Due to the efforts of the  ground staff the turf wicket was prepared and ready for play on time despite the inclement weather during the night. With the VTCA round call off on Saturday Sunshine United fielded a strong side to face off against a Sunbury team comprising a mixture of experience and up and coming young guns of the future.

Promoted as a family day the kids were well catered for with a jumping castle, popcorn and fairy floss, those of us struggling on the Sunday morning grabbed a fresh cup of coffee from the Sacco Coffee van.

The weather held off throughout the day enabling Sunshine United to post an impressive total of 149. The Sunbury innings falling short after an exciting start. The match was played in good spirit and the after match speeches and trophy presentation was followed by group photographs.

Moving speeches by both club Presidents and James father, John  all spoke of the love for the game that James had, what James meant to both clubs, the character and the loss felt by all with his passing. In the forefront was the community spirit brought together by this tragedy, this was a celebration of cricket and the enjoyment of the game in reflection of what James expressed while at both clubs.

For those of you who had not had the pleasure of meeting James, following is a tribute to James by Adam Kirk, SCC Vice President and Captain:

James had played all his junior cricket with Sunbury Cricket Club (SCC), I personally came to know him when I selected him to play his first senior game for the club as a 14/15 yr old medium pacer. As a kid he showed everything you want to see in a young sportsman. We played that year of seniors with mostly nine (9) players and qualified for finals with only eight (8). James in his first year as a senior player won the Toby Surkitt for Best Junior at the club in the 2008/09 season. He had made his first ton for our club and decided at the right age to try his hand at turf cricket in which he chose to play at Sunshine United as his brother in law was connected. James was well loved at SCC, affectionately known as “Sampras” for his similarities to the great tennis player. After his passing Sunbury CC and Sunshine United CC created what is now known as the James Wilson Memorial, a T20 game played between the two (2) clubs that James loved in which plays a major role in with respects to the people that grew to love him like i did.
