Sunbury Cricket Club finish season 2020/21 as VTCA Clark Shield Division 4 1st and 2nd XI Premiers.

Playing off in the best of 3 match Grand Finals both teams went into this weeks GF2 in the favourable position having won GF1 last Saturday. As last Sunday was deemed a wash out, the deciding rounds were scheduled for this weekend.

1st XI GF 2

Heavy rain during the week caused concern over the preparation of the wicket however with some minor reparation work early in the morning play was not effected. SCC Captain Steve Treweek continued his toss winning streak and without hesitation chose to bat.

In early trouble at 3/14 it took both Jordan Tentonello (13) and Lachlan Treweek (15) to settle the innings however it was Jason McGann’s 63 that proved to be the saviour with support from wicketkeeping all rounder Regan Connell finishing the innings on 20 no. featuring a magnificent cover drive. Not to be outdone, Jason sent the residents of Almurta Avenue ducking for cover with a trade mark 6 over mid wicket. The Roar posted 152, 30 runs more than in GF1.

Footscray United started their innings in similar fashion being 3/19 however from there offered little resistance being bowled all out for 43. Again Jason McGann destroyed the top order finishing with 4/12 off 7 overs, Jason McGowan continued his consistent good form with the ball, sometimes unplayable (3/21 off 8) and Jay King finishing the job for the Roar bowling an attacking line finishing with 3/10 of 5.2 overs.

SCC now progress onto VTCA Division 3 next season, as we grow and develop in this competition player retention will be front of mind for the incoming coaching panel.

2nd XI GF 2

We all new coming up against Aberfeldie Park, the Roar had a tough job to overcome the previous 2 time premiers of VTCA Div 4 2nds. However, as last seasons Div 5 premiers our team was far from overawed by the occasion with a solid win in GF1 the previous week.

Winning the toss and batting the Bears had a solid start seeing off the opening bowlers, it was Blake Watson making the initial breakthrough with help from Nick Smith taking a fine catch. Working their way to a strong position of 3/74 it was all downhill from there with a devastating spell from Kyle Corcoran (4/16 off 6 overs) and Murphy Boyd (3/17 off 7 overs) restricting the total by bowling out the opposition for only another 20 runs, all out for 94.

Some may say this could have been enough on the sometimes unpredictable Aberfeldie Park track however “cometh the moment, cometh the man”, Scott Yardley (36) took the challenge up to the Bears attack together with young gun Jake Egan (38 n.o) the Roar lost their 1st wicket with only 19 runs shy of the total required. Mitch McLean continued his good form and with Jake went on the finish the job in the 25th over with the Roar only losing the 1 wicket.

A magnificent win and certainly one to remember by a team with a mix of experienced players and a spread of youth the envy of all clubs in the district, all ably led by their well respected and popular Captain Sam Fisher.
