 Important announcement to all members

A new era for the Sunbury Cricket Club as it enters into a partnership with Sunbury Bowling Club

The Sunbury Cricket Club (SCC) is very pleased to announce it will be based at the Sunbury Bowling Club (SBC) as of season 2013/14. Over the past few months negotiations between the two clubs has resulted in a new 5 year agreement. There were several discussions between the executives of the two bodies with many points discussed including patronage and support, the logistics of game day at the Clarke Oval and the use of storage and facilities. SCC recognises as part of this agreement that it has the responsibility to promote the SBC through its membership by hosting major functions at SBC’s impressive facilities.

It was voted unanimously by the full Committee of Sunbury Cricket Club to take up the offer presented. This is one of the biggest decisions of our Committee in many years and was researched in detail and debated at length. This decision is based on securing the long term future of our club, the growth and progression of cricket at our club and the growth of cricket in Sunbury as a whole. In return we will endeavour to promote the Sunbury Bowling Club and its facilities as best we can.

SCC has called the Clarke Oval home since the ground was first opened for use in 1952. Nothing has changed SCC’s use of the Clarke Oval and the McMahon Pavilion. We believe the Clarke Oval is the premier cricket ground in the district and SCC intend to call it home for the next 61 years and beyond.

Over the years we have had many good times at SFSC and we have a lot to be thankful for during this partnership. It has been the venue for our after match entertainment, presentation nights and official functions for over thirty years. There has always been a strong connection between the two groups as many SCC past players and life members have also been Directors of SFSC including, Stuart Davies, John Arthur, Ray Lethlean and Foundation Director, Bill Morrison.

The Sunbury Football Social Club (SFSC) was established in 1980 to help support and provide funds for the Sunbury Football Club. Realizing things were pretty quiet in the summer months, SCC were approached and having come to an agreement, had the use of their facilities in return for financial support. We believe this long term relationship was of mutual benefit and we are thankful for the years of support. In the best interests of the club and its members it is now time to embrace a new relationship.

There has always been a strong connection between the Sunbury Football and Cricket clubs. Through history the names of great local sportsman have shared premiership success at both clubs and many have served as coaches, players and administrators. Neil White, Phil Squires, Bill Morrison, John Arthur, Barry Palmer, Richard Lee and the list continues. Currently both clubs have several members on their lists enjoying both sports and there is no reason why this shouldn’t continue. Testimony to this relationship was the support Phil Sewell received when the two clubs combined recently hosting a fund raising Golf day.

SCC Members are asked to support this venture as we embark on a new era for our club. We thank you for your patience as we move into our new home and expect our members to embrace this move as a move in the right direction for the long term benefit of the Sunbury Cricket Club.

Please direct any questions to your SCC Committee.

Marty Kelders

SCC Secretary

Sunbury Cricket Club    Season 2013-14

Senior Cricket Pre-season – Practice Match vs. St Andrews C.C.

The season is less than a month away, time to get some valuable match practice. St. Andrews Cricket Club has been invited to join us in a friendly practice match to help prepare both clubs for the coming season. Newly appointed  Captain/Coach of the St. Andrews Cricket Club (Pascoe Vale) for this season, Paul Newton was a key player in our McIntyre team of last season.  Paul played with plenty of heart for our club and will be missed. We wish him all the best and SCC is only too happy to host the day at the Boardman Oval, Sunbury.

A squad of approximately 15 players will be selected on the day. For those who would rather a hit in the nets and a bit of a trundle, bring your gear.

This is a full club function requiring all hands on deck, there will be a bbq lunch, we will need scorers and umpires so lets all get together and enjoy each others company in a relaxed setting before the real action starts in a few weeks.

Dont forget training will continue every Tuesday and Thursday @ 5.00pm  and every Sunday morning @ 9.30am from now on (except on the 23rd Practice game day) . Keep in touch with whats going on through this site and on FB.

Phil Sewell Golf Day

Phil Sewell Golf Day  26 April 2013

Phil Sewell

The call went out to the Sunbury sporting community in response to an unfortunate incident where Phil Sewell was tragically hit by a car leaving him with life threatening injuries. Presently Phil is slowly recovering from his injuries and is experiencing complications but has a positive long term outlook. Current day members and former team mates of Phil from both Sunbury Cricket Club and Sunbury Football Club joined forces together with family and friends to hold a fund raising day to help Phil through this difficult time.

Goonawarra Golf Club offered the use of their course and bbq facilities to host a fund raising event. A 4 member per team Ambrose competition with a total of 14 teams teed off in pleasant conditions and in good humour. There was a good spread of golfers of all levels and ages, all willing participants ready to contribute to this worthy cause.

Outright winners on the day : Patty Morganti, Dean Surkitt, Rhino and Peter Hickey

Longest drive: Darryl Taylor     Nearest the pin: Ryan Charity

Fund raising activities on the day included a drinks truck delivering drinks to thirsty golfers during their round. Fines were imposed for misdemeanors such as air swings, not making the ladies tee, hitting a ball in the water and falling into a bunker! (nice one Uma)   At the club house a bbq was on offer, a raffle and silent auction was held. Contributions through the green fees and donations for the raffles and auctions all combined to make the day a huge success.

Phil’s father Greg Sewell addressed the gathering and expressed many thanks on behalf of Phil and his family for the support as he continues his recovery. Many thanks also go to the organising committee and those who helped out on the day and also to the management and staff of Goonawarra Golf Club for their assistance and use of facilities.

2012/13 McIntyre Cup Grand Final – update days 3 & 4

2012/13 McIntyre Cup Grand Final – update days 3 & 4

GDCA rules of play for a McIntyre Grand Final state that if more than 45 minutes of play is lost due to rain then the match reverts to the ordinary rules of cricket. The team batting first can continue it’s innings until all out, meaning there would be no compulsory closure of a first innings on tea of the second day. A fourth day is available in order to achieve at least a first innings result. A drawn game would result in United being awarded the cup as they finished higher on the ladder than Sunbury. For Sunbury to win it must force a result.

Day 3

At the start of the days play United’s 7/292 off 99 overs presented our team in the royal blue with the task ahead of them requiring quick wickets. Unfortunately that wasn’t to be the case, Hughes (57) resumed after retiring hurt last week, adding 37 to his score supported by Smith-Hayes (20) and Skovdam (41).  United’s tail wagged in a costly session, amassing a huge total all out for 406 of 134.5 overs. Leading the attack and with the lions share of the work, Jason McGann finished the innings with an impressive 45 o,16 m, 5/89, Paul Newton competed hard 37 o, 9 m, 2/110, Heath Boffey providing support 18 o, 2 m, 2/66 and Steve Treweek bowled tidy spells  for 13.5 o, 4 m, 1/48.

The start of Sunbury’s innings didn’t go to plan with fill in opener DamienLake being run out with the score on 2. Anthony Riggio and Paul Webber provided not only entertainment but took on the United attack and set the scene in a positive manner. With the score on 78,  Riggsy (42) after a scare when skying a ball off Skvodam failed to capitalise and soon after was caught behind off Morrison. Webbs continued his innings with cover drives straight out of the training manual but just as it seemed he was well on top of the attack a slower ball from Morrison took the bails and ended his innings on 47  (fow 95). Dave Burrowes departed for 8  skying a hook shot straight down the throat of fine leg. Matt Burrowes (19) and Heath Boffey(3) are used to digging in and providing rear guard action through out the season provided some resistance,  but today just wasn’t meant to be. Jason McGann (20) and Steve Treweek (3) not out overnight, total at 6/147.

Day 4

A mammoth task was ahead of our team and almost immediately as play began hearts sank in the royal blue camp as Jason McGann edged a ball to slip in the second over of the day. Steve Treweek batted with resilience for a well made 19 and Paul Newton (18) played an entertaining cameo however the task proved to be too great and the side was all out for 196 off 61.1 overs. United’s Morrison 18 o, 6 m, 4/50 and Powell 5 o, 1 m, 2/16 tore the heart out of the Sunbury batting line up and should be congratulated on their effort for their team.

As it turned out things didn’t turn out our way in the end as the task proved to be too vast  but there was a lot to be proud of and certainly the commitment to the contest and the effort could not be questioned. We have completed the 2012-13 season with the feeling of unfinished business and a hunger for success to bring into next season. Well done guys you made us all proud.

The club in the royal blue, our club, the Sunbury Cricket Club is back, a force to be reckoned with in the GDCA!

Congratulations must go out to our adversaries Sunbury United for an excellent season. They justifiably started as firm favourites in the Grand Final and proved far too good in the end. United have been the benchmark of the GDCA in recent times winning their third premiership in four years. This kind of success does not happen by accident.

The recipe for success is as true today as it was when I played at SCC as a youngster in the late 70’s. Heading the list is  junior development and player retention. From then it is leadership, hard work on the track and commitment. Sunbury Cricket Club is currently reaping the reward of some hard work behind the scenes from it’s Junior program and having made the McIntyre Cup level have pulled together a formidable senior team. Lets get behind Jason McGann and the coaching team and prepare ourselves in the preseason to take the next step. The journey along the road of ultimate success is a lot of  hard work but believe me the reward makes it all the more worthwhile. Jump on board….

See you on the cricket arenas of the world
